First Tiny Whoop: Buy a 65mm Analog BNF, an ELRS Radio, and Any Goggles
Short version: buy a 65mm analog bind-and-fly, an ExpressLRS radio, the cheapest goggles you can stand, and six packs. Fly it indoors until it is boring. Everything else — 75mm, 85mm, HDZero, race motors, 5-inch — is a second purchase, and a better one for having flown first.

Size: 65mm, and not because it is cheap
A 65mm whoop on 1S is the only class that is forgiving enough to learn on indoors. It bounces off walls, it fits a hallway, and a bad crash costs a prop. 75mm is the bridge to outdoor flying on calm days; 85mm is usually 2S and has real punch. Both are heavier and faster than a first pilot needs, and both hurt more when they find the TV.
BNF, not a build
Bind-and-fly unless you already solder small pads without thinking about it. A first build adds three failure points — the AIO, the receiver, the motor solder joints — to a hobby that already has enough. The BNF Air65 is the airframe behind every 65mm number on this site.

Radio: ExpressLRS, no exceptions
Every current whoop ships with an ELRS receiver. A radio that speaks ELRS natively means one bind, no module, no dead protocol in two years. The TX16S is what I fly; the RadioMaster Pocket is the same firmware in a smaller box for less money. Either is fine. Bind it, confirm failsafe cuts the motors, then put props on.
Goggles: whatever you can afford
Any analog box goggle works for a first whoop. I started on an Eachine EV800D and moved to a Fat Shark HDO2.1 much later. A cheap 5.8 GHz monitor works too — you lose immersion, you keep a hundred dollars. Buy nice goggles after you know you will keep flying.
Do not start on HDZero. Digital video on a 65mm costs 34% of your flight time — 233 s against 154 s, measured on the same pack. That trade is worth it once you care about the picture, and not before.
Do not buy, yet
- Race motors. The 40000KV 0702s on the gear page are marked not-for-beginners for a reason.
- 75mm or 85mm as the first frame.
- Any 5-inch kit because a video said so. Different hobby, different budget.
- A second whoop before you have broken props on the first.
Before the maiden
Fly the browser sim with your real radio until angle mode is dull and acro no longer makes you panic. Pull starting rates from the tune database so the sticks feel like the real thing. Then: props on the right way, failsafe checked, pack seated, clear floor, short hops. Land and touch the motors — warm is fine, hot is a problem.
Sanity-check before you order
Put the build into the calculator: dry weight, motor, prop, pack, video system. It will show thrust-to-weight and estimated flight time against the measured Air65 row. If your candidate is far off that row, something in the list is wrong.
